North America's early abundance allowed our forebears to dream of a democracy in which there would be enough for all. George Washington said the land beyond the Appalachian Mountains should serve as “an asylum for the poor.”
But did our founders rely too heavily on that abundance, and build a government that becomes less democratic as resources grow scarcer?
